This month vehicle dealers are buzzing about the new General Motor’s sedan concept for the 2018 Buick Regal, which will be unveiled in Warren, Michigan on April 4th, this year. Following the unveiling, car enthusiasts can visit the vehicle at the International Auto Show in New York later this year.
The announcement of a new sedan came as a surprise to many, as they haven’t shown popularity over the past decade among many drivers. The new Regal will offer the appearance of a hatchback or station wagon, bringing back the family friendly car from years gone by. With most drivers choosing crossovers or SUV’s for their spacious interiors and off-road capabilities, we at Nanaimo Wheaton GM are especially curious to see how the sedan will fare against larger models.
As of now the construction of the new sedan line isn’t underway, but sources suggest that it won’t be a U.S. build, but rather an international outsource. If the new Buick isn’t built in Germany, there’s talk that the contract could go to China, as many other popular models are currently being manufactured there.
Hatchback and Wagon Benefits
Hatchbacks are the kings of storage in the car world; not only do they have large roomy trunks, but the back seats almost always fold down flat to produce even more space to transport boxes, carry home groceries, or pack up your camping gear. Hatchbacks are also an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a standard sedan because they shorten the tail of the vehicle, and produce a more stylized image. General Motors produces many vehicles with sleek lines and luxury interiors, so it will be interesting to see what kind of trim and seat covers the newest model will offer.
Wagons are also known to have generous interiors, and have plenty of room in the rear to pack luggage or shopping. If the new Regal turns out to be a wagon, it might be a shock to the North American marketplace, but Europe is still a fan of the station wagon, which is one reason many think the car would find success here.
Sneak Peaks of The Latest Line
While the car has yet to be revealed, there’s been talk that the test car has been spied in Germany, leading many to believe that Germany may be the place GM has chosen to manufacture their latest design. The description of sneak peaks from car enthusiasts describe the new Regal as being very similar to that of the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer, which is a German wagon. If the Regal does turn out to be a wagon, it will be the first of its kind to be introduced as a new model in the U.S. since the 1990’s.
Buick has released 3 crossovers in the past, making them a front-runner in the battle of the luxury SUV’s. This latest change with the Regal could mean a completely different direction for future Buick models, depending on the success of the car. Some Buick fans have reported mixed feelings on the changes, while others wonder if the sedan will see positive sales in North America, or only across Asian and European markets.
We may not know exactly what the new Buick will look like, but one thing is for sure. We can expect the same modern safety features, luxurious seating, and sleek finish as other models in its class. Will the Regal be a blast from the past, or a trailblazer to start new automotive trends? We’ll have to wait until April to know for sure.
